PET REHOMING
At Anderson, we know how hard it can be to give up your pet. We want you to do everything possible to keep your pet, but if that becomes impossible, we will do everything in our power to give your pet a second chance to find his forever home.
Anderson Animal Shelter is a limited admission, no kill shelter. What that means is that we do not euthanize adoptable animals and we never euthanize one animal to make room for another. Instead, we only accept new animals as space permits. Euthanasia is reserved only for the very ill, or seriously injured and for those animals who pose a danger to humans or other animals. Because of this philosophy, we cannot immediately accept every animal about which we are contacted. As adoptions occur, space will become available for new animals to come into our care.
SURRENDERING YOUR PET
If you need to relinquish your pet immediately, here is a list of other regional shelters that may be able to assist you.
RETURNING A PET YOU ADOPTED FROM US
We will always accept animals adopted from us back into care, no matter how long ago the adoption occurred. It may take us a few days to accommodate your request for us to accept your animal, however, depending on shelter space availability.
SURRENDERING A STRAY CAT OR DOG
If you have found a stray cat or dog and would like to bring it to Anderson, we can only accept it if we have available space and it was found in the municipality of South Elgin, IL. If you have found a stray animal in another area, please contact the animal control in that jurisdiction.
EXCEPTIONS
Even though we may not have room to accept new animals, we will make room for STRAY animals who are desperately in need of our immediate assistance because of injury, illness or because they are too young to care for themselves.
In these instances, you may call our Main Shelter at (847) 697-2880 or during regular business hours, you may bring the animal(s) to our Main Shelter located at 1000 South La Fox Street, South Elgin, IL. We do appreciate a "heads up", but no appointment is necessary for these special needs animals.
If your own pet is injured or ill and you need assistance, please understand that we cannot assist with veterinary care.
WILDLIFE
Anderson does not accept wild animals. If you have found a wild animal and are certain that it needs help, please contact Fox Valley Wildlife Center at 847-697-2880 ext. 25.
