Anderson Animal Shelter’s Military Veterans’ Program (MVP) supports the mutually beneficial relationship between animals and veterans. Our program offers opportunities for veterans to connect with animals through adoption, fostering, training, and volunteering.

Veterans always get 50% of the adoption fee waived.

This is just one way for us to thank you for your service.

Good on up to two (2) pets - with proof of honorable service.

MVP Veterans Volunteer for Pets
You’re already a hero to our country.

Now be a hero for pets too!

We could not provide such outstanding care for our animals without the help of our dedicated volunteer force. Our MVP initiative is designed for veterans and run by veterans. MVP volunteers help the animals in a variety of ways

Behavior Training Program
One of the most common reasons owners relinquish pets to shelters is because of behavior problems they have been unable to resolve.  Many of the animals in our care have experienced traumatic situations that have caused fear or anxiety-related issues to develop. At Anderson, we are dedicated to finding ways to address the root causes of behavior problems and to develop behavior modification programs for each animal, based on building a foundation of trust and utilizing positive reinforcement training methods.  Much of this work occurs at the shelter, but in some cases, animals benefit from foster care in a calmer home environment.

Shelter Animal Foster Program
Tired of coming home to an empty house?  Interested in helping a special-needs pet? How about becoming an Anderson foster volunteer?  Foster volunteers provide in-home care for animals who require individualized care that can’t be provided in a shelter environment.  Young puppies and kittens, pets recovering from surgery and animals requiring intensive behavior change programs all benefit from out-of-the-shelter time in loving foster homes.  All food and veterinary care are provided by Anderson.

Active Duty Foster Program
Military life can be a challenge for pet owners.  When activated, some members of the military have nowhere for their beloved pets to go during their deployment.  Through the Active Duty Foster Program, veterans provide foster care for the pets of active duty military for the term of their deployment.  Pets enrolled in this program receive free veterinary care through Anderson’s veterinary clinic, free food, and supplies, as well as behavioral advice and support – all at no cost to the MVP participant.
