Anderson Animal Shelter is seeking personable, high-energy team players with a strong work ethic and passion for animal welfare. Under the direct supervision of the Adoption Center Manager, the Adoption Counselor is a highly visible representative of Anderson Animal Shelter that provides an exceptional shelter experience to the public. Adoption Counselors facilitate meaningful communication between Anderson Animal Shelter and our community while providing important operational support to ensure efficiency within the department. <br> Weekday, weekend and occasional holiday shifts are required. 10-15 hours per week with shifts available M-F, Sat and Sun. Shift times vary, so candidates with an open schedule that can be flexible are preferred. Two years of customer service experience required.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES​​
  • Promote Anderson’s mission by treating all animals humanely and with care and compassion at all times.

  • Maintain the front desk in a clean, stocked and organized manner; keep shelter database accurate and current at all times

  • Promote constructive relationships and demonstrate respect for everyone contacted

  • Acquire a strong understanding of the internal movement of Anderson animals from intake until adoption as well as the adoption process. The routing and filing of paperwork in accordance with shelter policies and procedures

  • Respond with urgency to requests from the public and Anderson staff while being clear, concise and helpful

  • Identify and diffuse potential conflicts by consistently making decisions that resolve problems. When unavoidable, deal constructively with conflict, keep focus on issue, not on person. 

  • Engage the public with respect and courtesy --being objective and reasonable at all times.  Greet and direct to appropriate areas in shelter

  • Determine adoption applicant suitability and assist with viewing of adoptive animals

  • Counsel adopters in appropriate care, positive reinforcement training and ownership responsibilities

  • Operate cash register and carefully maintain financial records to ensure accurate cash, credit and check handling.

  • Follow closing procedure--ensure deposit receipts are secured in the safe.

  • Understand the impact of their work on others. Lead by example.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Must have a high school diploma (or equivalent)

  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills: fluent in written and spoken English as position requires fine attention to spelling and numerical details. Spanish bilingual familiarity a plus.

  • Knowledge of or a willingness to learn about companion animal care and behavior issues.

  • Ability to quickly absorb and discern complex issues and make principled decisions in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment

  • Must possess intermediate computer skills

  • Ability to multi-task, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision

  • Professional attitude and appearance

  • Should demonstrate strong administrative skills and participatory work style while also being self-motivated, flexible, highly organized and driven to succeed.

  • Willingness and ability to adjust to changing conditions and priorities.

ABOUT US

Anderson Animal Shelter was incorporated in 1966 as the Humane Society of North Central Illinois. Over the years, the shelter has transitioned from a traditional community animal shelter to one of the most progressive humane societies of its kind. Anderson Animal Shelter collaborates with public and private organizations and individuals to shelter, care for and promote the adoption of stray and unwanted companion animals. We advocate for the compassionate and humane treatment of these animals through direct care, humane education and community outreach programs.
