Winter Care Tips
- Provide a shelter for the cats (dog house, dog igloo, cat house, trashcan with “doors” cut into it, etc.) that is elevated off the ground on wooden blocks, turned to face away from the wind, and lined with STRAW not hay. Straw is one of the world’s best insulators and will keep the cats toasty warm when they burrow into it. Avoid towels, blankets, and hay which all absorb air moisture and become wet and uncomfortable.
- To keep water from freezing, use a heated or insulated water bowl for water. Check water regularly. Never put water into the cat’s shelter because it can spill.
- Use dry food which isn’t prone to freezing. Feed the best food you can afford. Good nutrition is crucial to maintaining the health of the cats.
