Choosing the Right Pet

Puppy Adoptable Adult Dog Adoptable KittenAdoptable Cat

Puppy, Kitten, or Amazing Adult?

Take this quiz to help you decide. Kittens are cute and puppies are precious, but how do you tell if one is right for you? Take the following test to determine your kitten or puppy compatibility.

  1. Do you have a boundless supply of time, energy and patience?
  2. Are you prepared to work with your new young charge and understand their occasional mishap with a shoe, carpet, litter box or new piece of furniture?
  3. At the end of the workday, do you look forward to going for a long walk or taking a long nap?
  4. When you see a scratch on a piece of furniture do you consider it ruined?
  5. Are you primed to care for your new companion for upwards of 20 years?
  6. Do you have very young children, or do you plan to have children while your pet is still a kitten or pup?
  7. Are you aware that any cute little kitten or puppy will look like an adult within 6-12 months?

The decision of whether to get a youngster or an adult should not be made lightly. Take the time to talk to an AAS adoption counselor who will assist you in choosing the right pet. And, if you'd like to involve your children in the process of choosing the right pet, visit the American Veterinary Medical Association's web site for an interactive exploration of selecting a pet for your family.

Special Needs Animals Need Special People for Love!

While most of the animals at Anderson Animal Shelter need very little or no medical attention before they are available for adoption, some animals arrive at the shelter with health restrictions or special needs. These particular animals need to be adopted by an individual or family willing to go the extra mile and have patience concerning limitations the animal may have.

The Shelter is always in need of caring adopters willing to give these special companion animals the tender-loving care they so need and deserve. Some may require medication or due to a birth defect have limited function that would mean extra attention. Do you think this is the right pet for you? If you think you can open your heart and home to a special needs animal, please call the shelter for more information.
